Synopsis

Material by various authors who in chronological order of productive appearance are; Vincenzo Gioanola (Turin), Saul Saguatti (Bologna), Alvise Renzini (Bologna), Mario Verger (Rome), Tommaso Cerasuolo (Turin), Leonardo Carrano with Alessandro Pierattini (Rome), which represent an almost complete cross-section of national production difficult to see otherwise in its productive entirety.

Direct animation on film is a natural boundary between production simplicity, manual cinema, transfiguring lens of the expressiveness of the sign and the image, the passage of the projection of the film leads to a verification of the actual relationship between micro and macro cosmos, from 35mm to large screen via television monitor.

The documentary represents all the different expressive aspects of this technique, from the direct sign on transparent film, to the scratch on opaque emulsion, up to the sign on film clips where the difficult result of reinterpreting a new product with existing actors and scenes for other screenplays is achieved, managing to compress and reinvent, in a room, the whole cinema machine.

As for content, we start from the works of Vincenzo Gioanola who was the first to resume this technique by bringing it in a pop way on the television screen, with the video Fight da faida, or clip for Paolo Conte, these works lead Saguatti to resume the experience with Short Splatter Film, cotofilms linked to the splatter and techno musical experimentation of the 90s, coming to then produce Renzini's first work which continues with his strongly authorial personal productions, such as the work of Cerasuolo, or works with a strong artistic instinct such as for the films of Carrano, Pierattini.

Everything will be interspersed with other commissioned works, such as theme songs, video clips and contributions of which Verger and Rai represent a perfect example, up to interventions for theatrical works, in addition to original telecines, fast hard bursts and pure images set to music extemporaneously by Andrea Martignoni, who also takes care of a presentation at work as an expert in international animation, citing the masters of the Genre, as well as doing a superb work of sound author, taking care of the interviews and editing them in audio like an artistic interpretation.

Subject

The project stems from the need to catalog a small mountain of work, produced since the 80s in Italy as animation and experimentation drawn directly on film, various material from clips to theme songs to original telecines to real self-sufficient shorts, the project involves the production of a 25-minute documentary, with interviews and clips of original films.

The "CHAMBER FILMS" project aims to tell from a mix of interviews with the authors, skilfully acoustically re-set by Andrea Martignoni, the direct experiences of a particular production, edited on the "livers", parts of the authors' films, which together with cuts and processing heads will give a cinematic face to the words of the authors.

A short film that in an alternative way explains the who, how and what of an ancient and often forgotten animation technique, which finds in Italy a fervent productive example, becoming in addition to a documentary of public interest for the artistic quality of the images a useful teaching tool to reconstruct the Italian production of animation on film, a prolific and hidden sector at the same time.

Edited with bonuses of original telecine of the various productions re-set to original music for the project, technical material impossible to see otherwise, the general edited flow wants to give the sense of the first vision of the grumpy and fast telecine material, which imposes an alternative vision to the conventional analogue one, trying to reproduce in the viewer the alternative and improbable world of the authors immersed in 35mm universes , improbably slow in processing and absurdly fast and dirty in the final result.
